As a method of educating the public regarding the trials and tribulations of a woman dealing with the discovery and treatment of cancer, We Will Survive Cancer is preparing to sponsor an interpretative modern dance performance of The Materiality of Impermanence in Washington, D.C. Upon having been diagnosed with breast cancer, Sharon Marroquin, an accomplished choreographer, dancer, educator, and mother wrote and choreographed The Materiality of Impermanence. This award- winning performance portrays the powerful story of Sharon's battle with cancer. As the dance unfolds, the despair she felt in the beginning evolves into a message of hope in a stirring and visual program chronicling her diagnosis and process through treatment. The triumph of her spirit and health brings an extraordinary finale. We Will Survive Cancer will present this outstanding dance performance that demonstrates that joy and hope can be realized through various forms of art. Our objective is to offer a private performance of The Materiality of Impermanence to cancer patients and their families, at no cost, so that they may experience the comfort of healing presented by this amazing performance. We Will Survive Cancer solicits your support to bring this event to the Gala Theater in Washington, D.C. on July 10, 11, and 12, 2015. We cannot do this without your financial assistance. The cost to bring the EFTA00362634 troupe to Washington DC for 3 days is $65,000. We must raise this dollar amount by February 1, 2015 in order to make necessary deposits. Please take the time to read the attachments, which explains in detail the performance. I feel sure after reading the material you will want to help us in our fundraising goal. Your sponsorship will be greatly appreciated and, of course, your contribution is tax deductible to the extent allowed by Federal law. Thank you so very much for your attention to our appeal. Gayela Bynum Chair We Will Survive Cancer https://vimeo.com/96272112 The Materiality of Impermanence Sharon Marroquin MOTIVATION On January 8th, 2010, I received a call informing me that I had breast cancer. Since that moment, the eyes I see with belong to someone I do not know, and my body is a foreign puzzle with missing pieces. Every day I am newly surprised by the decimation of what my life once was. In order to make sense of this life-changing journey, I created a dance: The Materiality of Impermanence. SIGNIFICANCE Four years after my diagnosis, The Materiality of Impermanence represents my effort to create significance out of overwhelming despair. Dance becomes the language through which we understand that, although life is fundamentally impermanent, our spirit is stunningly eternal. DESCRIPTION Using contemporary movement language, the piece is structured as a series of solos, duets, trios, and group sections. It includes eleven performers, aerial dance, music, text and video design. Non-dancer members of the local survivor community participate in a section which honors the memory of loved ones lost to cancer. The following are some of the images from The Materiality of Impermanence: The sound of shattering glass penetrates the darkness. Lights fade up on a female form jailed within a small space: reaching, unfurling. A young girl sleeps next to a mother, peeling away every now and then to dance. Three women peer into mirrors, grieving for what is about to happen to their bodies EFTA00362635 and their spirits. A man's voice dispassionately explains Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Brightly colored bras are strung together, forming a clothesline that entangles and connects a group of laughing dancers. A lone figure with a suitcase embarks upon a voyage to an unknown destination. PREMIER The Materiality of Impermanence premiered in four sold-out performances in March 2012 at the Debra and Kevin Rollins Studio Theatre at The Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, Texas. AWARDS The Materiality of Impermanence was presented with awards from The Austin Critics' Table for "Best Dance Concert" and "Best Dancer". The production was also nominated in the categories of "Best Ensemble", "Best Scenic Design", and "Best Lighting Design" UPCOMING PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE We Will Survive Cancer will present The Materiality of Impermanence on July 10-12, 2015 at the GALA Hispanic Theatre (The National Theatre for the Latino Performing Arts in the heart of Washington, DC.) OBJECTIVES 1. To give survivors a different lens through which to see and understand our common experience. Women who have had breast cancer are in the process of re-identifying with their bodies. Responding to art has a therapeutic effect, and dance, in particular, provides a lived embodied experience. In our society, there are very few, if any, opportunities to engage in art as a therapeutic modality. 2. To give families, caregivers, and friends of those affected by cancer a way to process and understand what their loved one is going through. Cancer is like a large rock tossed into a pond: its ripples radiate in all directions, affecting not only the patient, but his/her parents, children, siblings, partners, and colleagues. 3. To connect with a general audience through eloquent and moving performance. The project will be publicized through local print, online, radio, television, and social media by targeting local theatre-goers, dance fans, and the Latino community. 4. To raise awareness about resources for cancer patients, survivors, and their families and caregivers. We Will Survive Cancer and Life with Cancer, two DC area non-profit organizations, have joined forces in order to reach out to those affected by cancer.
