Congress Virginia's 8th District, July 6, 2014 I'll start with a quote from Madeline Albright, former ambassador to the United Nations, to set the stage: "Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world, indeed, it is the only thing that ever has" is running for congress, and we need to elect her I have the honor of introducing today Many of you in this room are wiser on the world than I am, and many know better But in our purpose toda and for the next few months, we are of like mind - we need to elect We need to elect because the world is an unstable, unsafe, unfair and irrational place, and it has gotten worse, not better, because of the policies and behavior of those we have chosen to lead - and something needs to change I don't need to explain any of this to you, because I know that's why you're here We need to elect a, not just because of what she knows, but more importantly because of what she believes, and who she is She believes in social inclusiveness, that everyone matters and should be treated with respect She believes in fiscal responsibility, knowing our economic and social policies affect our future and determine our individual and cultural prosperity She believes in a strong national defense, that we need to influence the world, rather than the world influencing us We need to elect because she knows how to build desperately needed coalitions, she knows how to sell powerful ideas that will change us, our country, and the world, and most importantly she is dedicated, and knows how to make the right things happen EFTA00367141 EFTA00367142 In a perfect world — the world is a safe place where goods and services flow freely. The USA has full employment: in a perfect world, children receive a superior education, and our senior population is well cared for. The perfect world is full of tourists enjoying each other's cultures and traveling freely. In a perfect world people are loved and respected. But, we all know this is not the case. There is evil in the world and it demands we rise to protect our citizens and our borders. We cannot have trade, and tourism, and freedom, if our borders and citizens are not safe. And, we certainly cannot have these if we are attacked or if there is war with our partners. Today immigrants are flooding across our borders, other countries are sending their children for us to take of — people are coming to our country to get goods and services for free. I'm a first generation American on my mother's side, and I understand the opportunities this country has to offer. I understand why people want to come here. Immigration is good, but fixing our broken system isn't just about giving citizenship to illegal immigrants, it's about making sure in no uncertain terms that we never get into this problem again." But again, how can we fix this with Congress being broken? We have to address the issues of taxes, the economy, jobs, transportation, women's rights, healthcare and the environment. They are all intertwined after all! If business can't anticipate the rules, they don't know how to plan. If government can't provide services, people don't know how to plan. If taxes are uncertain, families don't know how to plan. And, if healthcare keeps changing, business don't know how to plan. These issues must be addressed and they must be addressed soon! We don't need bi-partisan legislation, we need NON-partisan legislation. It's time for an independent voice to get congress moving. It all comes down to a leadership! Congress, instead of working for America, has become a carefully choreographed political dance, and as citizens, unfortunately, we have become the wallflowers! But, we can change all of this. There is plenty of money, but taxes and purchasing programs are often in the wrong place. Corporations should be able to repatriate the money they make overseas at a reasonable rate. And, extremely large purchasing programs shouldn't be the 'pet' projects of congressman and senators. Think about the pension cuts to civil servants and military — $1.2.4 billion was saved — however the F35 is the largest acquisition in the world, at trillion dollars, yet has enormous problems to the point of being grounded. We need to fix our budget and start making wise purchasing decisions. Our pensions shouldn't be touched — a promise is a promise. And, I will fight to keep civil service and military pensions as promised! Many people ask me how I am going to compete with the political party machines? I ask them how did our forefathers think they could go up against the British Empire? I entered this race with no illusions. This is not a level playing field. To win both your trust and your vote I must overcome the tremendous money and name recognition advantage that (especially) my Democrat opponent brings to our race from his private sector car business. EFTA00367143 But ladies and gentlemen, you aren't looking for the best person from whom to buy a car...you are looking for the best person to represent you in Congress! I assure you that I have the energy, smarts, and enthusiasm to work the long hours the job requires on your behalf. To do this job right — you start at 7am and end the day long after dinner. No part of my day will need to be devoted to running an outside business! Congress will be my full time job... and my only job. Your vote for ANY of my opponents, no matter how much money they raise, or lofty titles they have enjoyed, is a vote for more gridlock. The time is now for the 'silent middle' to rise, the time is now to make your voices heard, and the time is now to realize your vote counts, and counts BIG! We need your help!!! We would love to have you volunteer — walking the district, phone banks, assisting with events, etc. We also need donations, and I promise you we will be fiscally responsible — no Eric Cantor type steak dinners!! We're running because we believe Virginia deserves better than what we're getting!!! And, we PROMISE to be frugal with our funds. As the underdog, we thought we should also work towards a greater cause than just my political campaign — that is why the campaign color is hot pink, for cancer awareness, and a portion of our donations will be given to the We Will Survive Cancer Fund, a local charity that helps cancer families in need. So, please help us get the message out there — the Silent Middle needs to rise, and cancer needs to be cured! I owe my allegiance to you, the people I will represent.
