From: Ike Groff To: 'carolyn malty' Subject: RE: another thought Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2012 15:53:54 +0000 I think that 15 is a ton of kids. Obviously the part that all the kids (and their parents) enjoy is playing in the games. Having 10 was actually a great number, I think all had plenty of playing time. It was roughly equal but I am sure not exact as that is hard to really hit by just eyeballing the clock. Just me personally I would rather pay extra to insure that each child gets more playing time. I know how as a coach you want all of them to play as much as possible. If we have 15 kids by chance show up one day we would actually have more subs than players. When I think a about the delta of $50 in relation to living in New Canaan it is small potatoes. Of course that is me and I do not know what a single mom like Yana or anyone else's financial situation is. So in regards to your second email I think that it makes sense to send an email to all the parents and lay it all out. Depending on all the conflicts if it is only 7 kids I think that splitting a field works. I really think that Chelsea will work with us. They want our experience to be good so we do this again and say good things to other New Canaan families I am sure. Also if the practice were moved to 4:30 to 5:30 Ty would actually be able to attend practice. I want to reiterate that I am happy to help make up the short fall. I am not going to let you do all of this work and then get jammed with a fee just because you were kind enough to organize this entire process. I really think that lain will enjoy being coach. If you think about it, all of us who have coached in NC in the past, we did it for free. I bet that lain will be happy with the free game time for DJ. I think we can be honest with him and tell him that the practice fee was not disclosed until we all committed and therefor the overall cost is adding up. We want to cover his fee for practice also but we want to keep the team at 13 so all the kids get enough playing time. See what lain thinks. I just think that he would agree. Playing time is where the value to these kids comes from. I just cannot believe the lain is doing this for the money or the savings for DJ but for the love of coaching a really nice bunch of kids. Lastly, if you want me to speak with the Chelsea team with you and just let them know our situation re the lack of organization, not disclosing fee for practice, and essentially giving us a practice time that only about 50% of our team can attend (I am not sure another time would be better off if Lain could coach other times but helps our case a bit) Original Message From: carolyn mulry Sent: Sunday, December 02, 2012 10:0 AM To: Ike Groff Subject: another thought Just thinking - do we add Milan Ashfar and Jack Grenier to our roster to defray some practice time cost? We had 7 at practice on Friday - 2 more will join next Friday (last week was a lx conflict), 2 have unmovable conflicts w/other sports, 2 are unknown (i reached out to determine if absence was lx thing or not). And, since we covered JS's League fee (a $12.50 per family contribution), do we also cover his field expense? With the present roster of 13, the contribution for his field time is approx $18. per family. EFTA00400535 Here's some numbers to juggle: $2580 ($215./hr x 12 weeks, one hour per week) practice field rental. for ease of comparison. Final l's rounded off 2580/15 players (full 13 roster plus Milan & Jack) = $172. 2580/14 players (full 15 roster minus JS) = $184. 2580/13 roster) players = $198. (full 15 roster minus 2 other sport/unmovable conflicts OR full 13 regular 2580/12 players (full 15 roster minus 2 unmovable conflicts & JS, OR full 13 regular roster minus Jamie) = $215. 2580/11 players (full 13 regular roster minus 2 unmovable conflicts) = $235. 2580/10 players (full 13 regular roster minus 2 unmovable conflicts & JS) = $258. From the way practice was structured last Friday, i saw mostly skill work which used half the field. Since there were only 7, there was no way to do a lot more than skills. Going forward, if so few show for practice, i considered splitting field time with another team - Ross Catlin practices 4:30-5:30. However, i have a feeling a few more will show this Friday - at least +2 or possibly +4. It's just my p.o.v. that 4 of players on field is more impactful during a game as far as playing time, and less impactful during practice, given same structure. Igor said he'd help Lain at next practice which might help if more players show. i could be very wrong, but my thought is that we can handle more players on Friday at practice. In games, going forward, we'll probably continue to have a small percentage of conflicts - yesterday's were: simultaneous basketball game, chess tournament, squash match. Of the players present yesterday, I think most will be consistently present except for maybe 2 who play hockey -- which is usually early morning, so ok. This doesn't figure in random sick days or ski weekends. Overall I'm guessing we run the chance of having a few more players show up at games than practices - if we open the roster further; less playing time. I thought about charging per hour/per player present, but that would mean calculating a different dollar amount each week based on attendance and collecting the cash to offset my c.c. payment PLUS it doesn't incentivize consistency in attendance for a decent practice experience. Let me know your thoughts. As you know, I value your opinion and experience.
