From: Ike Groff Subject: Early Tour 5.9.12 Date: Wed, 09 May 2012 10:16:39 +0000 Good Morning European Markets off 35-80 bps (DAX flat, IBEX -2.6%) Nikkei Closed -1.49% (HSI -0.75%, China -1.65%, KOSPI -0.85%) EUR 1.2974 (-0.24%) JPY 79.68 (+0.18%) EUR/JPY cross 103.38 (-0.49%) AUD 1.0063 (-0.57%) Copper -1.10% Silver -2.3% US 10yr 1.82% Futures: Dow -63, Nasdaq -16, S&P -8 $1582.60 (-$21.90) DXY $80.00 (+27c) Crude $96.33 (-68c) Gold Asian markets were back in risk reduction mode today and closed in the red across the board. SHCOMP -1.65%. There was some spec floated that China's ruling communist party is considering a delay in this year's party re-shuffling due to an internal debate over the size and composition of the 9-member standing committee of the Politburo (could push the power shift out to the Nov-Jan timeframe from Sep-Oct). In Europe, Greece's Tsipras (leader of Syriza party) is meeting with leaders of ND & Pasok tonight but chances of forming a coalition are slim and the mandate will pass to Pasok's Venizelos tomorrow night. Greek press is reporting that Venizelos will refuse the mandate to form a government and that he will ask president Papoulias to call a meeting of party leaders to try and broker a national unity government or announce fresh elections. Tsipras has reportedly sent a letter to the ECB/EU saying that the election results demonstrate that the terms of the bailout can no longer apply. The Troika has also cancelled its May mission to Greece according to Sueddeutsche Zeitung. EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki has called for an emergency summit on Greece for May 16 (the day before the deadline for forming a coalition or calling fresh elections). Germany will delay a planned vote on the ESM & fiscal pact until at least mid- June (Reuters). Meanwhile, the Spanish government will demand that its country's banks raise their provisions by - e35 billion on Friday (on top of the already required es,' billion). European markets relatively stable for now despite ugly action in Spain this morning: Spanish banks down 3-4%, Spain 10yr yield +17bps to 6.01%, Spanish 10yr spreads versus Germany blowing out of recent range, Spain CDS now north of 500 bps, IBEX -2.6%. EUR 1.2974 last -0.24%. DXY +0.36% and Gold getting hit hard -$22 to $1583. Heavy on the earnings front in Europe (highlights below).
