I am told he is to give a talk on one other paper as well during his visit...this is a very small venue by invitation only. I have looked at Brian Boyd's University of Auckland website but do not see anything re his visit to Cambridge...does Brian have another web site? I have a confirm from Sheraton for a room for Brian Boyd for April 10th-17th (you paid for the nights of 15, 16) May Huang is trying to find out more of a schedule for Brian as well... April April 13-14 The Shape of a Human Life Stephen Greenblatt (English, Harvard University) Peter Ellison (Anthropology and Human Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University) Fiction and evolutionary biology are both narrative•making practices. Each relies on an ordered account of events or facts to establish the connections that create a compelling story. Importantly, too, fiction and evolutionary biology share topical territory: life history theory—the sector of evolutionary biology concerned with the way organisms allocate time and energy among growth, physical maintenance, and reproduction— addresses some of the same conflicts and negotiations that arise in literature, including how parents invest in children and what children salve to elicit from parents; the perils of crossing from juvenility into social and physical maturity: the dance of partnered reproduction: and the refiguring of a life once reproduction ends. The proposed seminar brings together scholars from evolutionary biology and literature to explore areas of amplification and tension across disciplinary accounts of the life course, focusing on parent-offspring conflict, adolescence, the role of the individual, and non-reproductive identities. The exchange will be bi-directional, equipping humanists with tools to re-engage their texts from a life history perspective and outfitting scientists with an expanded understanding of what questions might be put to a biological data set. There, I focused on fiction. In its companion piece, Why Lyrics Last: Evolution, Cognition, and Shakespeare's Sonnets (April 2012), I focus on verse. Together these form the two main, often intertwined, strands of literature. I'd like to build on the difference between these two books to contrast the almost automatic convergence of patterns in fiction, or narrative more generally, and the compounding of patterns upon patterns—patterns athwart or concealed behind other patterns—in verse, especially in lyrics, verse without narrative. In much of his work Shakespeare weaves both strands together more memorably than anyone else. How can I show the enormous difference between the love lyricism in his greatest romantic comedy and the love lyrics in his Sonnets? Poet Don Paterson, in his buoyant recent book on the Sonnets, assumes that they "have to be read as a narrative of the progress of love." I will suggest, on the contrary, that we need to read them as lyrics, as verse without narrative, where other kinds of patterns come into play, patterns of experience and emotion, image and idea, word and structure, set forms and found freedoms.
