been convicted and who admit to their crimes, asking them what
sorts of techniques they utilized in order to perpetuate the
sexual abuse. There have been studies that have been done with
victims, in terms of asking them what sorts of experiences they
had. There have also been studies that have been conducted
with professionals in various fields; law and human services
and psychology about the types of tactics and strategies that
have been used.
Q. How do the results of those studies compare?
A. There's remarkable consistency. And even though
definitions may vary in studies, as they always do, there are
common -- a clear set of common strategies, techniques and
behaviors that have been identified in the literature across
time and across various samples.
Q. When you review articles about grooming, what sorts of
things are you looking for to determine the quality of articles
you are relying on?
A. I'm looking at whether or not it's in a peer review
journal. I'm looking at how a particular study was conducted.
So for example, if they're doing content analysis of an
interview, are they making sure that ways that that interview
has been coded by multiple individuals to get some sort of
consistency there. I'm looking at how they chose the sample
size. I'm looking at if it's a review that summarizes the
state of the literature, is the literature review
