Famine in East Africa
Drought and Famine Threaten Over 10
Million People in East Africa. Please Join with
UniversalGiving to Save Lives.
On July 20, 2011, the United Nations declared a famine in Somalia for the
first time since 1992. Currently, over 10 million people in Somalia,
Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti are threatened by the drought affecting the
region.
You can help Limn.
UniversalGiving is the leader in quality, vetted opportunities all over the
world. Join our global community in donating to these projects. You can
make an impact in someone's life today, and for the long-term. Below, we've put together our top opportunities, so that you
can contribute to our partner organizations who are responding to this crisis.
Feed children suffering from malnutrition in the Horn of Africa by giving to the World Food Program USA. Bring water to
the drought-stricken Sambuni District of Kenya by supporting the International Medical Corps. Or choose from our other
ways to make a difference:
Direct Drought and Famine Aid:
Help the UN Refugee Agency provide Relief for Somalia's Malnourished Refugee Children
Help International Medical Corps provide Lifesaving Relief to Drought Victims in East Africa
Help ActionAid deliver emergency food supplies and water to East Africa
Support International Humanity Foundation's Famine Feed Programs
Opportunities to Give to Ongoing Development Projects in Somalia:
Give S25 to support a student in Somalia
Give S25 to heal a child suffering from malnutrition
Give S30 to sponsor an orphan in Somalia
Give SS0 to feed a child for a month
Give 5150 to feed a family for a month
A famine is declared when acute malnutrition rates among children exceed 30 percent, more than two people per 10,000 die
per day, and people are not able to access food and other basic necessities. Pastoral and nomadic populations in East Africa
are most at risk and have little access to government or non-profit aid.
With the worst and most ill-equipped conditions in southern Somalia, the UN and Somali government estimate more than
3.5 million Somalis may starve to death. Over 10,000 families have traveled to Mogadishu and have dispersed to several
displacement camps, sometimes walking for three weeks in an attempt to reach humanitarian relief. Every day counts for the
people in this famine-affected region, with over 500,000 children facing imminent threats to survival and lifelong

consequences in physical and mental development.

As more information is gathered about the needs of the victims, we will have Additional opportunities for you to provide aid
to the people who need it. We are working with our NGO partners who are on the ground ready to help the victims and we
will keep you informed about how you can continue to help. Thank you for your commitment to helping those in need.
