LETTER FROM THE
PRESIDENT
I had the great privilege to
deliver the commencement
address at Dickinson College
this past weekend. It is a
pleasure to see so many
immensely talented young
people getting ready to embark
upon their new lives and
careers -- including several
who will teach and study
overseas through the Fulbright
Program.
Dickinson is a leader in study
abroad, and I applaud
President Durden's
commitment to providing
students with the international
experience to develop skills
needed by American and
international graduates to

Learn How We Are Working To Build Closer Ties
With Indonesia
To increase the number of U.S. students who study abroad
in Indonesia, IIE brought a delegation of U.S. campus

succeed in the global
workforce.
The previous week, I had the
opportunity to travel to Brazil to
meet with higher education
leaders in government
ministries, scholarship
agencies, and universities. I
had expected to be impressed
with the bold new training
initiatives that were being put in
place to meet the needs of the
country's rapidly growing
economy.
I was more surprised, and
greatly heartened, to learn that
President Dilma Rousseff had
just announced that she aims
to provide 75,000 study abroad
scholarships to Brazilian
students through 2014. This is
exactly the right step to
prepare Brazil's young people
to thrive in the knowledge
economy. I hope to see more
Brazilian students coming to
the U.S. to study.
We are also working to
increase U.S. study abroad
opportunities in China, India,
Indonesia and other Asian
countries, with support from the
U.S. Departments of State and
Education, the National
Security Education Program
and the Freeman Foundation.
Educational exchange plays an
important role in deepening the
ties between the U.S. and the
world. This month's news items
highlight the ways we are
facilitating this on a policy level.

Meet Four Dickinson College Graduates Selected for
Fulbright Awards
Four Dickinsonians have been selected for prestigious
Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards. Two students will
conduct research — one in Egypt and one in Argentina --
while two others have been awarded English Teaching
Assistantships that will enable them to engage with
communities in Indonesia and Thailand, respectively.
Raising the Profile of International Higher Education
at the G8/G2o
IIE and Campus France convened the inaugural session of
this new annual summit in Paris on May 9-10.
Representatives from the leading host and sending
countries explored the key policy challenges facing
international education and discussed the issues that drive
national policies and impact global academic mobility. The
United States will host the meeting next year.
IIE's Japan Emergency Fund Has Helped More Than
zoo Students
11E, with support from the Freeman Foundation, made
grants totaling over $400,000 to more than 100 students in
the first round of its emergency grants program. The grants
are helping students from Japan on U.S. campuses whose
home country support has been devastated by the recent
earthquake and tsunami.
New IIE Books Look at Global Mobility
Over the last decade, the number of
students studying outside of their
home country grew at an
unprecedented rate. While most of the
traditional host countries are seeing
the numbers of international students
continue to rise, newly emerging hosts
in the developing world have entered
the competitive higher education
market and are re-mapping the flow of
global talent. A suite of new books look closely at mobility
