Dear Dr Leuchter,
Thank you for your invitation to deliver a talk, participate on a panel, and attend your three-day Art,
Neuroscience & Psychiatry Symposium on music and neuroscience this November at the Luskin Conference
Center, which I am delighted to accept.
I look forward to discussing the details this coming week - might you be available to talk (or meet on campus)
this Wednesday Aug 9th?
There are a few possibilities for the topic of my talk, including one on neural representations of the "devil's tone"
and "perfect fifth" in Western tonal music that I gave at the National Academy of Sciences Koshland Science
Museum (http://thesciencenetwork.org/programs/TDLC+Convergence-2014/mark-jude-tramo), and a version of
the "Big Ideas" talk I gave at the Aspen Ideas Festival on improving auditory-cognitive development and
emotional well-being in critically- ill infants in neonatal ICUs (https://www.aspenideas.org/session/festival-
gpening-and-welcome—whats-big-idea). Please visit us at The Institute for Music & Brain Science
ft.tp://www.BrainMusic.org) for information and other topics you might find relevant to your Symposium.
Please let me know if I might be of help identifying potential speakers for your Symposium - there are several
UC faculty in our newly-formed President's Multi-Campus Music Research initiative (UC MERCI) who might
be suitable for participation.
Yours,
Mark

Dear Mark,
I am writing at the suggestion of our mutual friend Marco lacoboni. On November 9-11, 2017, we will be
hosting our second annual Art, Neuroscience, and Psychiatry Conference at the Luskin Conference Center on
the UCLA campus. This conference is jointly sponsored by UCLA and the Los Angeles County Museum of
Art (LACMA) and is designed to demonstrate the relevance of neuroscience discoveries not only to the health
sciences, but also to the arts and humanities, education, social sciences, and public policy. This extraordinary
meeting will bring together over 300 world-class artists, neuroscientists, and clinicians for a three-day
educational program. You can see the program for last year's conference at this link: http://www.
artneurosciencepsychiatry.com.
The conference consists of a series of symposia that include speakers who can address topics from
complementary artistic, social, and neuroscience perspectives. One symposium that we are planning to
include this year is on music and neuroscience. I am hoping that you will be able to join us for this
symposium to speak about your work in therapeutic potential of music. We would ask that you deliver a 20
minute TED-style talk, and participate in a panel discussion at the end of the symposium as well as take
questions from the audience.

I hope that these dates will work with your calendar and that you can accept this invitation. You would be
welcome as our guest for the entire conference if you would like attend. I believe that you would find the
experience — particularly the opportunity to connect with the leadership of LACMA and with the larger
UCLA clinical psychiatry community — highly illuminating and rewarding. Please let me know if you will be
available to participate and then we can discuss some of the details further. I look forward to hearing from
you.
Best regards,
Andy
