GliitSTY `PUDDING, IlPsTITUTE OF 1770 WHAT IS THE HASTY PUDDING INSTITUTE OF 1770? The Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 at Harvard University comprises the Hasty Pudding Club, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, and the Harvard Krokodiloes. Over the last two centuries, it has grown into a premiere performance arts organization, a patron of the arts and comedy, and an advocate for satire and discourse as tools for change worldwide. The Hasty Pudding Club is the oldest and most prestigious social club at Harvard. It was founded in 1795 in a dorm room, and was thus named because the founding members always brought the traditional colonial dish, hasty pudding, to share at their meetings — a tradition which is upheld to this day. The Club boasts many famous alumni, including five Presidents of the United States. Born from the Hasty Pudding Club, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals performed its first musical, Bombastes Furioso, on the auspicious evening of Friday the 13th, December 1844. Since its humble beginnings in a Harvard dorm room, the Theatricals has grown into an original, student-written and composed, full-scale pun-filled musical extravaganza, which culminates each year in an all-male kick-line. While the Pudding remains all-male on stage, female members have been working on every aspect of the show since the 1950s. Pudding shows have a long tradition of daring social and political commentary, never shying away from controversial current events. EFTA00458289 Every year, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals bestows the Woman of the Year award (since 1951) and Man of the Year award (since 1967) on performers who have made lasting and impressive contributions to the world of entertainment. The MOY and WOY celebrations and roasts attract considerable media attention in the U.S. and worldwide. Recent honorees include Chris Pratt & Amy Pochler in 2015 and Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Kerry Washington in 2016. Finally, The Harvard Krokodiloes, founded at the Hasty Pudding Club in 1946, are Harvard's oldest and most prestigious a cappella singing group. The Kroks perform popular music from the Great American Songbook and beyond in nearly 200 concerts every year, including a ten-week, six-continent summer World Tour.
