The structures have no walls, therefore the panels are somewhat exposed to the worst of the elements. The pigments are natural earth pigments which can be sealed with an acrylic matte sealer. For long term preservation the back side of the stripped and flattened frond should probably be treated with an insecticide and/or a sealer for strength. (They will be fumigated before they leave New Guinea.) In the Washkuk, panels are sewn together as they are never perfectly flat or the same size, nor do they have nails. I do need to make sure you understand that these are not shields. They are panels made from the flattened bottom end of a sago palm frond. They are quite light and much more fragile than a wood shield. I would be happy to send you, free of charge, an old beat-up (and disposable) panel to confirm that we are all on the same page.
