(Photo: Monika Rittershaus) The hero in Leo§ Janaoek's opera The Cunning Little Vixen is not a princess or a knight but an animal of the forest. This is a unique piece of music theatre in other respects as well, such as its magically luminous music, its poetry and its comedy. Simon Rattle presents the work together with star director Peter Sellars, with whom he has already realised many exciting projects, including their acclaimed interpretations of Bach's Passions. READ MORE »Pure joy« NEW IN THE ARCHIVE: SIMON RATTLE WITH MITSUKO UCHIDA AND AMIHAI GROSZ P (Photo: Monika Rittershaus) For his last season as the chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Sir Simon Rattle wanted works and guest soloists he felt particularly close to — and of course the wonderful pianist Mitsuko Uchida, who in this concert performed Mozart's last piano concerto, could not be left off this list. The evening also included the Philharmoniker's 1st principal violist Amihai Grosz as the soloist in William Walton's Viola Concerto. Plus, Sir Simon wanted to perform the Haw Janos suite by Zoltan Kodaly once again with his EFTA00632518 musicians following its success at the 2014 New Year's Eve concert. The Berliner Philhamioniker made this "brilliantly orchestrated music from 1927 shimmer and sparkle, turning it into pure joy" (Der Tagesspiegel). It is evident that Herbert von Karajan, master of luscious sound and emphasis, was an ideal Tchaikovsky interpreter. In these recordings from 1973 he is conducting the last three symphonies, including the famous PathOtique.
