Rview nl onsw ;`,Anne-Marie Slaughter on How Networks Can Change the World Monday 3rd April, 7pm, Emmanuel Centre What is happening in global affairs in 2017? The rise of populism in Europe and Donald Trump's 'America First' policy are causing much handwringing. The model of international cooperation and open, win-win politics that has dominated for the last 50 years seems to be in decline as nations turn in on themselves and prioritise their own interests. Many of us want to oppose what's happening but feel powerless to take practical action. What is the concerned citizen to do? Enter Anne-Marie Slaughter, one of America's leading foreign- policy experts and former adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. who is coming to the Intelligence Squared stage to share her analysis of the current state of geopolitics and put across an empowering vision of her own. For Slaughter, the only way forward is to use networks. While statecraft may be for states, webcraft, as she calls it, is for everyone. So what does that look like? It looks like Wikipedia, Change.org, Occupy and Black Lives Matter, all of which are peer- driven, open and participatory, and can be created out of nothing more than the stuff of human connection plus 21st century technology. It looks like conscious capitalism, such as Starbucks' pledge to hire 10,000 refugees over five years in response to Trump's travel ban, a move that is inspiring other companies to do the same. Or Google posting disguised anti-Isis advertisements to prevent jihadi recruitment. What Slaughter calls the chessboard or Game of Thrones style of politics - the model which dominated for centuries when the great powers struggled to advance their own interests in a deadly competition - is enjoying a resurgence. But it doesn't have to win out, she will claim. People who want to oppose power can stand together and use modern technology to act at scale. In our new world of shifting paradigms, is this an effective form of opposition the ordinary citizen can take? Or is it pie-in-the-sky 'clictivism' that makes people feel good but achieves little?
