Does the Hamas-Fatah reconciliation pave the way to peace
negotiations with Israel?

government. The immediate impact of the announcement
to reconcile was to stop all peace talks. After refusing to
talk to his Israeli counterpart for six years, Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas decided to blow up any
chance of an agreement by secretly agreeing to join
forces with an organization committed to Israel's
destruction.
If implemented, the agreement joins the two leading Palestinian parties and
sets the stage for long overdue parliamentary elections. This is not just a
blow to peace, but a defeat for the Palestinian people. Neither party has
shown any interest in democracy. Fatah has repeatedly delayed scheduled
elections, primarily due to fear of losing to Hamas as it did in the last
election. Both, meanwhile, have ruled autocratically and abused the human
rights of the Palestinians under their control. Hamas remains committed to
creating an Iranian-style Islamic government and has created an
oppressive environment in Gaza for non-Muslims and Muslims alike.
