Finance Importance: High Dear Rodger: I hope you're well - and I am sorry we have not yet met in person. I spoke to yesterday on potential areas of overlap and I mentioned this very exciting new opportunity. As you may already know, I work with Arjuna at Omidyar Network on Financial Inclusion as well as Property Rights (which has some links to work in Metafinance). I also sit on the boards of MFX Solutions and MIX. I writing today because I wanted to introduce you to an extraordinary mind and person, Jeff Golden, who created PRIME Finance. His work might be of interest to BMGF as this is truly a ground breaking initiative. Although it may not fit squarely in your current strategy, it might be worth considering as a special initiative. PRIME may well change the course of history in terms of how the judiciary deals with financial markets, and as a result, this new international body may help prevent new financial shocks. You may have already heard of PRIME, as it has received wide press coverage (FT, WSJ, etc..). In a nutshell, PRIME is a new international body of legal experts, based in the Hague, which seeks to build the capacity of national judges and regulators to deal with financial disputes. They seek to educate (since the technicalities of derivatives often exceed the knowledge of courts) and harmonize the way in which national systems arbitrate and adjudicate these disputes. They are supported by big legal names, including Lord Woolf and Lord Collins, as well as bankers such as Nout Wellink and Thierry Porte. Jeff was a founding Partner of Allen and Overy in the UK, and now teaches at the LSE, but most of his time is spent working on PRIME (he is Board Chairman). I have met Jeff through MFX Solutions - the first vehicle made to offer FX risk mitigation to microfinance investment vehicles. We invited Jeff to join our board because, amongst his many achievements, he is the main author of the ISDA master agreement. I do hope that you'll be able to connect with Jeff as he would very much welcome your thoughts on his work.
