A JOYOUS EASTER
Jews en Route from Joseph's Tomb Shot-at; One
Dead, Five Wounded Apparently by Palestinian
Security Officers
A group of Hasidic Jews en route home from prayers at the
traditional site of Joseph's tomb near the West Bank city of
Nablus in the early hours of Sunday morning came under
attack by Palestinians firing from a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
One man was killed and five were wounded. The three-car
convoy raced to an Israeli army post when the shooting broke
out. One of the injured received a life-threatening wound to the
abdomen and underwent emergency surgery after being
airlifted to a hospital from the army post. Israeli news sources
are reporting that the incident appears to have been the result
of a lack of coordination between the Israelis and Palestinian
security forces — the latter who were apparently in the chase
vehicle that shot at the Israeli convoy. Both the Palestinians
and Israelis are investigating.

step down within 30 days, handing power to his vice president
following 32-years as Yemen's leader. In return, Saleh will
receive immunity from prosecution. Saleh's capitulation came
after a massive demonstration that some estimates peg in the
hundreds of thousands shouting for his removal. Although the
protest organizers have agreed to the Gulf States' deal, it
remains unclear whether the immunity provision has been
accepted. The opposition head has said the deal is accepted,
but listed reservations that include immunity, the formation of a
unity government within seven days. Opposition is also
demanding that Saleh step down before any deal takes effect.
Libyan Army Suspends Anti-Opposition Attacks in
Misrata; US Drones Enter the Action
Libyan army troops loyal to Mu'amar Al-Qaddafi on Saturday
suspended attacks against rebels in the city of Misrata in order
to allow tribal leaders to try to negotiate surrender by rebel
leaders. The announcement came from the Libyan foreign
minister who said that the government troops are not pulling
back from the beleaguered town. For the first time, American
drone aircraft entered the fray on Saturday, with Predators
carrying out bombing runs on forces loyal to Al-Qaddafi. The
Pentagon declined to identify targets, but did confirm the
action on Saturday afternoon.
Palestinian 'Popular Struggle' Conference Raises
New Threat of Intifada
The possibility of a new Mlitada, a popular and violent uprising
against Israel, was raised at the 6th Annual Bil'in Conference
on the Palestinian Popular Struggle. The yearly parley, which
is named after the town where anti-Israel protests focusing on
the controversial security fence are held weekly, was also re-
named to honor the Italian pro-Palestinian activist who was
murdered last week by Salafist Islamists in the Gaza Strip. In
the presence of political leaders, foreign diplomats and
religious leaders, the head of the Bil'in protest organization
threw the threat of violence into the mix, suggesting that
September, the target date for a declaration of Palestinian
statehood, would mark the onset if no diplomatic breakthrough
comes by then. Young leaders have been urging an "uprising"
similar to others in the Arab world, the exception being that it
would target Israel rather than the Palestinian government.
Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud 'Abbas last week
reiterated his opposition to a third Maeda.

trial in Cairo on a date not yet disclosed. The prosecutor
claims that the former energy officials made financial profits
"through selling and exporting Egyptian gas to the state of
Israel at a low price below international market rates at the
time of the contract." Concern over the future of the gas
contract was one of the first issues to be raised by Israelis
when Mubarak was swept out of power and replaced by a
military council. Many observers see the issue as an indication
that the "cold peace' between Egypt and Israel since the
historic peace treaty in 1979 stands to get a whole lot colder.
