Milken Institute 2013 Year in Review
G'2,
In 2013, the Milken Institute reached new heights of activity and
impact. Our mission - to improve lives around the world by advancing
innovative economic and policy solutions that create jobs, widen
access to capital, and enhance health — has never been more critical.
I hope you enjoy these highlights of an extraordinary year. With your
support, we'll go even further in 2014."

What makes the Milken Institute more than a think tank? Our unique ability to bring together people with the minds and the
means to take real action on critical issues. In 2013, the Institute convened 125 separate events, with more than 11,000
participants. These range from our trademark Global Conference, to meetings of our Global Capital Markets Advisory Council,
to workshops of nonprofit disease foundations through the Research Acceleration and Innovation Network. Our DC-based
Center for Financial Markets held regular congressional staff briefings and policy roundtables, and our Milken Institute Fellows
in Israel met often to review their work on economic development. Gatherings of Milken Institute Associates, at Global
Conference and elsewhere, connected them with innovative leaders — and each other. Milken Institute Forums, open to the
public, brought inspiring speakers and thought-provoking authors to our Santa Monica headquarters.

Content
Our research puts authority behind our ideas. Nonpartisan in
outlook and data-driven in approach, our research staff conducts
analysis and develops insights that can drive change. In 2013, the
groundbreaking study "A Matter of Degrees" pinpointed the value
of education to a region's prosperity and served as a blueprint for
communities and individuals charting their own economic
advancement and career paths. "Global Opportunity Index:
Attracting Foreign Investment" identified which countries are
creating the best environment for the foreign direct investment that
fuels economic growth. Robust data sites accompanied both
studies, providing interactive tools for diving into the numbers. Our
California Center studied income and educational disparities in the
state and the cost of payday lending to California consumers. Our
finance experts pointed out that "Breaking (Banks) Up Is Hard to
Do," and we convened leading authorities to propose "A Pragmatic
Plan for Housing Finance Reform."
California Summit
"Our wealth is in the minds of our people." said Governor
Jerry Brown, keynoting this year's California Summit. The
more intimate format of this year's event led to frank
discussions and practical solutions.
