The recent worldwide Ransomware epidemic, for example, affected more than 200.000 computers in 150 countries, targeting individuals and global companies including Fedex. The nightmare scenario of an entire city's physical infrastructure being brought down by cybercriminals is well within the realms of possibility. As tensions escalate, will they explode into traditional military conflict? Or — almost as frightening — will countries wall off their intemets to protect themselves, bringing the dream of a global. open worldwide web to an end? Sadie Creese Professor of Cyber Security at the University of Oxford, where she heads the Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre at the Oxford Martin School. Recently. she was a member of the panel commissioned by the govemment's Chief Scientific Advisor to review The Defence and Security Threats and Opportunities presented by the 'Internet of things' in the next 0.15 years'.
