StJeff Roth, the last remaining dip filer in The New York Times's "morgue."
Jeff Roth, the last remaining clip filer in The New York Times's "morgue." Stephen Hiltner/The New York
Times
Hello Insiders,
Did you know that The Times has its very own morgue? If that sounds too creepy
to believe, fear not: There aren't any dead bodies there. Our morgue is far more
lively — a massive storage house three levels below ground, chock full of old
photos, prints, slides, obituaries and dips. In one visit down there, I actually
found an announcement of my own parents' engagement buried deep among
index cards.
The master of the morgue is Jeff Roth (see him in the photo above), and you can
take a trip down there with him in this marvelous story by Insider's Stephen
Hiltner. Read!
(By the way, we'll be doing real life tours of the morgue in the coming months so
keep checking this email for dates!)
A little further afield, and straight out of the department of stranger things, our
correspondent Motoko Rich writes of her experience straddling the demarcation
line between North and South Korea. "I couldn't resist taking a photo of my
sneakered feet on the North side of the room," she writes. The visit ended most
bizarrely and unexpectedly with ... selfies. It's true! Read!
Something fun before you head out for the weekend: Our latest copy-editing quiz
has landed. Read carefully, but don't take too long — we're on deadline here!
Until next week,
Francesca Donner

P.S. I want to direct you to a new podcast at The Times — "The Daily." I think you
will find it a fascinating dive into the daily news reports from journalists at The
Times. To make room for "The Daily," we plan to stop producing our "Inside The
Times" podcast. We're sorry to see that go, but we hope you'll agree that "The
Daily" makes for a good replacement. Comments? Email us at
