This thread are discussions from a few years ago on the anti-edge.org idea to organise and mobilise the counter
to militant atheism. Would love to get your thoughts on this as it is ripe to happen and could form a strong basis
for Sci-Foo.
Here is the video of Paulo Coelho (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulo_Coelho) "outing" me: http://dId-
conference.com/events/on-mindfulness-a-conversation (starts at around the 10 minute mark). I've attached his
most famous book, the Alchemist, to this mail.
Given your knowledge and interests, connections, and resources it would make a difference. I can rally the
academics in this community and work with you to identify the key areas ripe for research. Sci - Foo could
provide a platform or we could use The Science of Consciousness as a basis. I hope you will give this deeper
consideration and I am happy to apply all my full efforts in this endeavour.

As Daniel says, Evolver can contribute a lot to this collaboration on an "Edge.org for consciousness." I've
been having exciting and productive discussions with Rome about the integral archive and the "war of the
worldviews" project (Gino might of been thinking of the "war" metaphor when he wrote his email below...),
and we're exploring ways for Evolver to partner. Stephanie and I also had a great introductory drink with
Poonacha recently and learned about the many initiatives he and Deepak up to. There's lots of potential for
alignment and mutual support here.
Gino's idea of a "Edge.org for consciousness" resonates for me and the people I've shared it with. The
integral archive is an important initiative, but there's an opportunity to do something in parallel: a platform
for lively discussion about the intersection between science and consciousness that engenders a large,
engaged community -- an activist community that not only challenges the so-called "skeptics," but supports
a cultural shift toward consciousness, compassion and love.
An effort like this is a natural extension of what Evolver is already doing. Reality Sandwich gets 170,000
people monthly engaging in the ideas that are inspiring the next wave of consciousness culture. RS is an
intellectual platform for deep thinking in this area, we've published many of its leading visionaries
(including Deepak, of course, among 500 other writers), and we're giving increasing attention to the science
of consciousness. Thousands of people are connecting with transformational thought leaders through our
live video webinars. Our grassroots non-profit, the Evolver Network, is active in 40 cities.
Ultimately, what we all want to see is for the "science of consciousness" community to be mobilized and
active just as the skeptic scene is. The interest is certainly there. The scientists and scholars who are
developing the new paradigm are ready for the right platform.
We'd love to help make it happen.
Cheers,
Ken

Hi Gino,
Thank you for including me in this discussion. Deepak, you may remember I was on your talk show at
Deepak Homebase and also your radio show. I am the author of the books Breaking Open the Head
(Random House), on psychedelic shamanism, and 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl (Tarcher/Penguin),
which looked at the indigenous prophecies of cultures like the Maya and Hopi in relationship to
accelerated technological evolution and deepening environmental crisis, among other factors.
I have been seeking to build a "counter institution" since 2005 - 6, when I started the first version of
Evolver.net with social entrepreneurs in Los Angeles. With Ken Jordan, we re-started Evolver.net in 2007,
first launching the web magazine Reality Sandwich, which Ken still runs. We also launched a platform for
interactive video teleseminars, Evolver Learning Lab. In partnership with North Atlantic Books, Evolver
ran a publishing imprint, Evolver Editions, www.evolvereditions.com, which I edited. More recently, I
hosted a talk show on GaiamTV, Mind Shift, featuring interviews with Russell Brand, Alex Grey, Howard
Bloom, Eve Ensler, and others. A documentary was also made focused on my work and research, 2012:
Time for Change, with interviews with Sting, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Paul Stamets, and many others. My
new project is a think tank, supported by Peter and Jennifer Buffett and the Tides Foundation, Center for
Planetary Culture.
Evolver also spawned a nonprofit, The Evolver Network. We built a network of local communities
interested in transformational ideas and practices ranging from permaculture to shamanism to alternative
economic models. We still have several hundred organizers and dozens of local groups around the world.
Through these initiatives, the goal was to change the paradigm from materialism to a new model that
encompasses a realization of the depth dimensions of consciousness as part of the scientific worldview. I
believe this new worldview has political and social dimensions. Our current social structure is not only
unethical it is also suicidal. Skeptical materialism leads to ecological disregard and self interest at the
expense of the whole. I don't think humanity can change direction in time (we currently face 4 - 6 degree
Celsius temperature rise by 2100, potentially an extinction-level event) without a new paradigm and
underlying mythology to accompany it. This new model would seek to reduce human suffering as well as
the level of economic inequality and social injustice.
For all these reasons, I really appreciate Gino's concept of constructing an alternative to edge.org that
encompasses the myriad efforts, projects, and initiatives within the consciousness movement that have, so
far, lacked connectivity and coherence. One thing that I have seen, again and again, is a kind of close-
minded factionalism within the consciousness community that prevents real dialogue, as well as willful
misinterpretations and misconceptions. For instance, I have often found my work dismissed, unread, by
people in the Ken Wilbur "camp" because of the suspicion of the psychedelic experience as a pathway to
illumination.
I think we have to reckon with the varied levels of personal development that influence the organizations
that people build around themselves. One person may have a relatively advanced level of intellectual or
EFTA00700417
spiritual development in some ways, but a relatively low level of emotional or personal development in
others. I have often seen the incapacity of people in the progressive and consciousness communities to
work together effectively as part of a larger individuation crisis. The organizations then tend to reflect the
limitations (and ego complexes) of their leaders and founders.
While skeptics are united by a simplistic concept, the various factions of the consciousness movement are
often separated by their different ways of articulation and also different levels of intellectual
sophistication. For instance, I find it difficult to get behind more speculative efforts that seem to lack
scientific proof, such as Emoto's water crystal work or some of the ideas presented by films like What the
Bleep... I have also found myself at conferences with many people whose methodologies appall me, such
as David Wilcock or Keisha Crowthers.
Perhaps we could develop a set of simple principles that could be disseminated to the various thought
leaders in the consciousness movement which would make a firm distinction between speculative or
fanciful thought and propositions that are in alignment with a scientific approach that maintains coherence
with an expanded scientific worldview?
Anyway, I apologize for this lengthy missive. In essence, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you
know that I would love to be involved with this initiative. I would be delighted to help with brainstorming
and strategizing.
Great to meet all of you!
Yours,
Daniel

Hi Deepak and all,
I first alerted Deepak to this several years ago when we were touring China. At the time, the key
culprit was identified as John Brockman and edge.org. It was brought to my attention through my
experiences with John and my involvement with TED and a lunch I had with Rupert Sheldrake shortly
after he was stabbed several years ago.
In our conversations at this year's TSC, we had a conversation about establishing a counter to
ge.org. This would include a directory of key people working in the space and their projects, events
that would bring people together, philanthropists, media people, etc. There are many people in this
space now all doing really interesting work. The idea is to get organised as edge.org has. Deepak has
a good relationship with Penguin and has a line of books that he curates. We could get a good
community of people together globally.
Toward this end, I hooked Rome up with the Evolver.net people. I've been talking to the Evolver.net
people who are interested in the "anti-edge.org" project. I also found out about Poonacha and hooked
him up with Evolver.net as well. It would be good for the consciousness communities around the
world to better organise. I also met Ronit Herzfeld based in New York who is interested in helping to
organise. Daniel Pinchbeck also has a new think tank that he's establishing.
As for waging conflict with the fundamentalist materialists online, I am inspired by the following
quote from Krishnamurti's Education and the Significance of Life:
Revolt is of two kinds: there is violent revolt, which is mere reaction, without understanding,
against the existing order; and there is the deep psychological revolt of intelligence. There are
many who revolt against the established orthodoxies only to fall into new orthodoxies, further
illusions and concealed self- indulgences. What generally happens is that we break away from
one group or set of ideals and join another group, take up other ideals, thus creating a new
pattern of thought against which we will again have to revolt. Reaction only breeds opposition,
and reform needs further reform.
But there is an intelligent revolt which is not reaction, and which comes with self-knowledge
through the awareness of ones own thought and feeling. It is only when we face experience as
it comes and do not avoid disturbance that we keep intelligence highly awakened; and
intelligence highly awakened is intuition, which is the only true guide in life.

They become speakers and conferences. It's funny because most of the skeptic influencers are
not real scientists - yet they want the prestige that comes with 'fighting for science!' so I see the
motivation being primarily attention and celebrity. Tim Farley for example received a 'research
fellowship' from JREF but claims money never changed hands.

Dr. Kafatos,
The official statement is that these orthodoxy zealots are all volunteers who just happen
to congregate in the same cyber-spaces and oppose the same people at the same time.
Unofficially, there are a number of them that are highly suspected of being associated
with skeptical blogs, journals or personalities and are using this conflict to attract readers
(the New Republic is a good example of this). Finally, I have heard from a number of
sources that there's been a connection between those targeted by these zealots and
pharmaceutical companies. It's not enough to make any sort of statement and I'm
looking into it further, but I've spoken to an investigative reporter who reported finding
patterns connecting the drug companies to specific zealot editors. She's been reluctant to
share her sources, as this is apparently a story she's been working on for a long time, but
I'm still at it.
Hope that's helpful!
