This is a heads up text that I received from Ron Lockhart. We served on the Centennial Commission together.
From Sean Krigger to Historic Preservation and DPNR - "The attached photo by Don Herbert showed up on
Facebook today. It shows the recent bulldozing, road work, and bush clearing around the previously untouched
18th/19th century ruins on Great St. James. I called SHPO and reported this activity about six months ago after
a concerned citizen(Peter Schultz of NextGen)notified me that there was heavy equipment working near these
ruins. It seems to me that the un-monitored scraping off of the ground around this documented (there is a CRS
on file with SHPO) historic site must be a violation of the Antiquities Act. Was there a permit issued for this
work?
My understanding is the Great St. James has recently been purchased by the same person who owns little St.
James. This does not bode well for historical or environmental preservation and protection in the USVI."
He said that David Knight contacted DPNR as well. He is on the Historic Preservation Board.
With warm regards,
Cecile
