it will take you two years . to understand the real workings of a new institution. your local resources reputation
will take a similar period. If you can structure something at harvard that gives you real reasons to be away at
other places, i think you win. Careful not to be too tough with smith, if he decides you are better gone. ,unlikely,
but removes your leverage forever.

Hi JEE...
So...Stanford...3ust back. I followed your advice. I don't think either the Dean
or the Provost likes me all that much — especially after I told both of them
what I thought of their wanting to force me out at age 72 (yes, that's what they
wanted). That's ended up being an issue; I don't care about tenure, but I
don't want to be thrown out on the street when I still have plenty of gas in
my tank (and would have no means to make the money necessary to meet my
mortgage!). The other bit was that I asked for funds to "kick start" the
center by employing a major gifts person and somebody like 3ennifer to
organize events ("product" for the Valley People, so they'll want to
subscribe to my program for the low, low initial sum of SOK/yr). They didn't
like that (it's OK to use Stanford facilities, but not OK to ask for more
cash -- 10M was enough).
So, we'll see. Meanwhile, I've asked Mike Smith to be able to transform the
Division of Continuing Education into an experimental laboratory, focusing
on web-based learning. We'll see what he decides.
I think I played this as well as I could have, and now need to wait.
I hope you are well!
