From: Lawrence Krauss To: Jeffrey Epstein <jeevacation@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Stuff Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2010 18:23:16 +0000 I am not.. And I understand.. That is why it is best to talk and not do everything by email. My point is that sometimes, in order to get science done, one has to build things first.. Except when i was at harvard I never had the luxury of simply plugging into an existing structure, and have always had to build my own.. It is a compromise.. It would be easier, and welcome, to simply be a part of something that was already great and where I could concentrate on nothing else, but in the absence of that i have tried to bring the mountain to mohammed... Anyway, call if you want today.. I have a conference call at 4 pm... Free otherwise.. Want to know what you decide as it may affect how I organize the meeting... Thanks Lawrence M. I appreciate all this. wrote: But what surprises me is I have been there for only 1.5 years and am building something. How anyone can expect any kind of track record at this point is beyond me. I have built programs at various places, and it takes time. At least generally 4-5 years, with fundraising, before things really get running. This is particularly difficult and sensitive because I am working across an entire university, and in certain areas starting from scratch. It is the most ambitious thing I have tried to do, outside of my own research, but that is why I left to do it. I could have happily stayed at Case and lived off the investment I had made there, but I wouldn't have been happy because there were no more challenges. Or, I could have gone to oxford and been the new Richard dawkins, but I have never felt good thus unless i am also doing and involved in cutting edge science. All this could fail.. We shall see. EFTA00753342 I am also aware that people have questioned my actions my whole career. It doesn't phase me... I have managed so far pretty well.. So as long as I have some sense that I know what i am doing, that is good enough.. Some compromises along the way, but again, I am what i am.. Let's talk today if you want, but my thinking is this: don't come back for this one if you have other commitments.. We can talk afterwards if you want about the highlights... and I could even videotape things if that sounds worth doing.. I have a portable digital video camera with me at all times.. The only downside of this is that I think you will miss interactions with a few of the new people, particularly Charlie and Shubin and you will be surprised by Wendy.. So,giventheabove,it is your call... Lawrence M. I have asked others toattend your conference , as my network is not insubstantial.. , the recent feedback , is tell me what new idea , not derivative, not meant for the masses has eminated out of his program.. I realize there are jealousies„ but I find myself with less and less firepower to respond On Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 11:27 AM, Lawrence Krauss < > wrote: I will spend the morning thinking more about honestly if this is worth your time. I am also upset about whoever is giving you information that i am not doing science... I am indeed stretched, but always have been. Nevertheless have been involved in a number of exciting, if focused projects and been building a group at asu, which takes time. So the last year and a half has been an investment, but like every other time I have moved to build a group, in the midst of it, the work continues. Our work on gravitational waves has spurred a lot of work, and a project I am involved in with a postdoc and people from Melbourne could turn out to have significAnt implications for dark matter. We now have 4 postdocs and three new faculty and are hiring two more, and i expect 2-3 new postdocs,so that by next year we may have one of the most active groups around. At the same time, it is true that I am looking around at other areas because I am not convinced that cosmology will be fruitful in the coming years and i have broad interests. Nevertheless, it is important to know whether the people giving information on my own science are knowledgeable. I don't think Bamaby, in spite of his intelligence, is.. And I am more convinced than ever, btw, talking to Paul Davies and others who are quite sympathetic and not anti-Templeton, that Templeton is in more disarray than Bamaby suggests. And Lisa, if she was discussing this, has, alas, a huge chip on her shoulder and gets angry too easily... And while the whole extra dimension thing has been important, it is nowhere as important as she thinks it is... EFTA00753343 Anyway, we wick talk more. Lawrence M.
