RE: the dialogue
We're really eager to work it out. Let's fix up details as the time approaches, and keep in touch. About the publication
too.

Should be a most interesting event. Don't know exactly what we'll be doing. I don't think I can be a participant.
Hope we'll manage to attend, at least the public debate.

Hi.. here is some info from the invite letter which came from Mark Mattson, Chief of Neurosciences at Johns
Hopkins, who is one of the organizers, along with Eric Horvitz, from Microsoft.. :
"The Origins of Pattern Processing workshop will explore the evolutionary, neurobiological and societal
foundations of advanced visual and auditory pattern processing. This will involve short presentations and extended
discussions by experts from disciplines ranging from neuroscience and evolutionary biology, to psychiatry and artificial
intelligence. Specific topics include 1) the evolution and adaptive value of pattern processing capabilities; 2) how nerve
cell circuits that process patterns are formed during brain development and modified by experience; 3) the
neurobiological underpinnings of advanced pattern processing capabilities such as map-making, language, art and
mental time travel; 4) the mental fabrication of non-existent entities such as gods and ghosts to explain poorly
understood natural events; 5) aberrant pattern processing in psychiatric disorders and in potential artificial intelligence;
6) designing computers and robots to mimic or complement the superior pattern processing capabilities of the human
brain; and 7) the implications of a better understanding of the brain's pattern processing mechanisms for the future of
computing and the future of our species. "
There will be a public great debate event also, called. Creativity to Madness: Mental Processing in Human and
Machine Brains
You are welcome to attend and be a participant in both, either etc.. Here was the initial invite list.. it has
changed since this one was sent out but it gives you an idea of the breadth of participants.... some of these people can't
come, some other names added.. Most have accepted, including Christoph Koch.. we are probably adding some
machine intelligence people..

We'll be in Tucson, visiting the linguistics department, mainly.
Most interested to hear about the conference. Hope we can work something out.

absolutely. Great.. hope it is vacation at the same place! We are going to have an Origins workshop
on Origins of Mental Pattern Processing: Lessons from the Brain with an interesting group of neuroscientists, and
machine intelligence types.. followed by a great debate on Creativity to Madness: Mental Processing in Human and
Machine Brains.
If you two would like to come up for the weekend and sit in and enjoy the resort and spend some down
time with me, I would really enjoy that, and we would cover all the expenses... if the timing works out. We could even
give you an honorarium if you wanted to spend more than a few days here relaxing and writing. Anyway the event is
March 11-13..
In any case, perhaps I will see you back east before then. Thanks for reaching out.
Lawrence

Me too. Was in Boston for only 3 hours on the 15th. Hopefully longer in Boston or NYC soon. Or
back in Arizona in the winter! :)

Hi Noam:
alogue
we are working on editing the transcript of the dialogue and it should be done in a week
or two.. It seems to be coming along well.. it comes in at around 20,000 words.. anyway, am convinced it could be the
basis of an interesting volume, supplemented by an intro, afterword, and maybe one or two other things..
Hope all is well. Jeffrey told me about your interesting meeting the other day.. wish I
could have been there to listen.
Lawrence
