Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This afternoon, remnants of Tropical Storm Emily caused heavy rai=s throughout South Florida, leading to the national
weather service to iss=e flood advisories for our city. This led to Miami Beach experiencing reco=d rainfall that caused
many of our streets and neighborhoods to flood. &nb=p;This was further exacerbated by power outages citywide, that
caused drai=age infrastructure to be temporarily offline.
The city continues to work to mitigate flooding by upgr=ding the stormwater system that drains the city's streets during
rain and =idal events. However, severe events can cause temporary flooding that impa=ts us all. The new system is
designed to handle 7.5 inches of rainfa=l with a peak intensity of just under 3 inches per hour. Today, our city s=w peak
rainfall intensities of greater than 7 inches per hour. This =s more than double the new design capacity. The new
stor=water systems have only been installed in approximately 15% of the city.</=trong> In neighborhoods that have not
been upgraded, the city continu=s to work to remove water from the streets and swales.
There is still a lot of work to be done and we need to continue =hese efforts. We are in this together. It is important
for=residents and businesses to also do their part to protect themselves and t=eir property. For businesses that know
they are in low-lying and flood pro=e areas, this includes using flood panels when heavy rainfall is expected.=nbsp;
Today is a reminder that we need to all be prepared for u=expected weather events. Our Public Works Department is
diligently working=to respond to this flood event and will continue to work to respond w=en severe weather hits our
city. Please see below the city's Ass=stant City Manager, Eric Carpenter's response to this event.
&nb=p;
Sincerely,
