The conference program *as it was• in Shanghai is still up at
http://www.consciousness.arizona.edu
Most speakers are coming with us, and we've landed at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Here's the scorecard and
draft of the next announcement, below, which will go out in the next couple days.
The list is for Plenary speakers, and most of our Concurrent talk, poster, exhibit and poster presenter people are
coming also. Plus there's a lot of talent at UCSD and elsewhere.
I've attached a possible new logo. What do you think? Its a bit goofy, but I like it.
Chomsky didn't want to fly to Shanghai but we taped an interview with him when he was in Tucson. Now we're
trying to get him live.
Much appreciated!!

We organized an awesome program, the best ever really.
TSC, The Science of Consciousness, 2017 in Shanghai.
We (CCS, Center for Consciousness Studies) had put out 35 to 50k for speakers (Including 9k for Roger
Penrose business class from London) not to mention tons of work from our side. They had agreed to pay our Center for
Consciousness Studies $100,000 per year for 5 years to collaborate on conferences and share logos, IP etc. for mutual
events. First payment 100k was to be March 1. Didn't happen.
Instead, they sent a contract demanding exclusive IP rights for 20 years in exchange for 150k per
conference we organized (we'd make that much per conference anyway, so essentially they were offering nothing for
exclusive IP rights for 20 years). They said we needed to sign by midnight or they would break off relations with us. It
was a weekend, University lawyers unavailable.
I showed the contract to my fiancé Betsy Bigbee (you met her at your place) who isn't a lawyer but has
10 years experience in contract law for some companies and real estate work. When her name appeared on the emails,
they went ballistic and said she had no right to be involved in any way. We pointed out to them that their own contract
said CCS could hire and employ anyone they wanted. They then were extremely, disgustingly rude to her.
I said we would not sign, and they needed to apologize.

They didn't, their deadline passed, and they wrote to all our speakers and registrants with their own TSC
conference (Technology, Science and Consciousness) logo, already in hand, inviting them and asking for credit card and
bank account information in an open email. They carefully avoided offering support for travel and lodging as we had
promised our speakers. When we said we'd move to another venue in Shanghai, they said our permit would be blocked
by their government connections.
The Woodenfish conference was something Gino tried to tag onto our conference which would have
been OK except they advertised all our speakers without asking them, or us (who would have paid their expenses).
So we decided to get out of town and regroup in San Diego, fortuitously where the Penrose Institute will
be formed. Roger had never been to China and was looking forward to it. We didn't do this to facilitate the Institute, but
it worked out well to have such a fallback. See attached.
Gino denies any knowledge but he's been involved the whole time in some way. He's pissed at me cause
I wouldn't let him give a plenary talk, but lye heard him speak many times and he's terrible. When we were supposedly
organizing the conference last December he only wanted to talk about his ancillary projects, not the conference itself,
and walked out of our meetings several times.
Basically, they tried to pull a hostile takeover. Or else were just completely stupid and misguided. Or
both. Ask James Tagg his opinion.
Most of the key speakers are coming to San Diego and there are a lot of great speakers available there.
We're finalizing on a site, and have several hotels available. Gonna be awesome, more science, less BS.
Wanna help?
Stuart
