Following Hurricane Matthew last October, the city made the determinat=on that we needed to install at least one permanent generator in Sunset Ha=bour. The Public Works Department immediately set out to evaluate which pu=p station would be most effective with a generator. Their determinat=on was that it would be best if both pump station number two and three had=permanent power. With this recommendation in place from our city sta=f, my colleagues and I authorized in February the purchase of these genera=ors so they could be in place ahead of the summer rain. While the city has been working through the procurement process to sec=re the generators, the process has been bogged down in bureaucratic paraly=is. As you can understand, this is extremely frustrating and the delay has=clearly impacted the progress we've made to address flooding in our city.<=div> To put it simply, we cannot wait any longer. Our residents, rightfully=so, are demanding action and I agree. Therefore, I have directed city staf= to immediately pursue emergency procurement procedures to secure the gene=ators to prevent future flooding as seen yesterday. The work we've done to mitigate flooding in 15-percent of the city is =orking and this morning we saw how the pumps drained the flooded streets q=ickly. However, I appreciate that more needs to be done to fully address t=is issue. This is why I am committed to ensuring we do all we can in my re=aining months as Mayor to deliver on my commitment to you to address the t=reats of sea level rise and climate change.
