Subject: RE: LSJ
The landscape supervisor position has not been filled, but not from lack of trying. As you may
recall, I preferred that we use Matt Mahaffey, who seems to be the most experienced but he was
let go by Curtis. I have met with him several times and he really does not want to come back. He
is doing his own thing and wants to be independent. He had an original proposal to come out 2-3
days/ week for a few hours and wanted a 12 month contract but Brice did not like this idea.
Another candidate was Adam Cook from St. John who we tried out on a trial basis on a small
landscape project and he was a total disaster. Bad communication and not dependable.
I have also had discussions with Carlos Robles who runs the Horticulture Department at UVI but
he does not know of anyone and he continues to search for someone.
I had another landscape contractor, Piers Johnstone from here in Columbus but he was more
interested in hard construction not landscape maintenance, plus he did not have Caribbean
experience.
We put a Help Wanted ad in the local newspaper but no results. We have also had numerous
word-of-mouth conversations with local people in the business with no luck.
I know this all sounds like a lot of excuses but we have pushed this hard with no luck.
However. concerning Matt Mahaffey. I still run into him most mornings at the coffee shop and we
always discuss LSJ. I think we can definitely hire him but on his terms. If you agree. I'll
approach him again and confirm his original proposal. He wanted to come out to LSJ for 2-3
days/week: 10-15 hours/week @ $75/hour or approximately $4.500/month. He also wants a 12
month contract. I think he'll do the best job and he has much respect for you and he knows what
you like. I recommend that we agree to his terms and hire him. Let me know.
The Irrigation Master Plan is something we always intended to do but it is not really needed until
the new desal plant is up and running. We already have some of the irrigation design done and we
do have Jeff Potts coming in next week to finalize the irrigation master plan. He is Landmarks in-
house golf and irrigation designer.
I know you like communicating by email but call me and we can discuss any of this and hopefully
we can talk more next week on the island.

thank you , I appreciate your willingness , in July you told me we needed to re-do irrigation and
needed a person as well as a landscape supervisor.. did this ever happen? .. sorry to appear
critical!, but i am very disappointed with the work done by the crews to date. they are not being
supervised, it is apparent they are working from drawings,

First of all, I want to thank you for the opportunity that you have given me to both help you and
to help Landmark. It is my hope that this opportunity will be beneficial for both of us.
Yes I agrcc that my presence on the island is important in order to coordinate all of the landscape
items along with the Island Grounds and construction crews. My schedule for the last several

months has allowed me to be there almost every other week. Now that you will be coming down
on more of a regular basis I should be there more often. The real key is for you, Gary & me to be
able to walk around on the island together so that we can thoroughly understand your vision.
If you think I need to be there on more of a regular basis I can definitely do that but I also need
for that schedule to work with my married life as well. As you know I live in New Albany with
my wife and she works full time so she will not be able to come down, so I need to get back home
on a regular basis. I wanted to know if you would consider renting a small apartment for me for a
while and I would come down for 2 weeks at a time and then go back to my office in New Albany
for a few days or a week. But I would always be available to be there when you plan to be there
so that we can walk the island and communicate.
This week I am in New Albany because I have 2 doctor appointments and I need to coordinate
the Irrigation design work and other items with our consultant and I plan to be back on LSJ by
this week end.
Let me know what you think.
Sincerely,
Stephen
