shall hold any office in the civil department of this state.” Texas: “Nor
shall any one be excluded from holding office on account of his religious
sentiments, provided he acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being.”
Rick Warren, pastor of America’ s fourth-largest church, told his
congregation, “I could not vote for an atheist because an atheist says, ‘I
don’ tneed God.’ ”
