Trust Funds - In the federal accounting
structure, accounts designated by law as
trust funds (regardless of any other meaning
of that term). Trust funds record the
revenues, offsetting receipts, or offsetting
collections earmarked for the purpose of the
fund, as well as budget authority and outlays
of the fund that are financed by those
revenues or receipts. The federal
government has more than 200 trust funds.
The largest and best known finance major
benefit programs (including Social Security
and Medicare) and infrastructure spending
(such as the Highway Trust Fund and the
Airport and Airway Trust Fund).
