National Issues
• Thump/McCabe FOIA Documents: OPA - Buzzfeed asked for comment and answers to several questions
about a document they received via FOIA referencing: a tweet President Trump wrote about Andrew McCabe
text messages; why the Office of the Deputy Attorney General intervened after the tweet; and how the
Information Management Division handled it. OPA declined to comment.
• Video Reconstruction: OPA - CNN inquired into whether the video of the main hallway around Jeffrey
Epstein's cell, which per the attorney was corrupted, was sent to Quantico to be reconstructed. OPA declined
comment.
• Domestic Terrorism: OPA - A member of the Atlantic Council who is working on an Op-Ed to urge Congress
to provide more resources to the FBI on domestic terrorism sought some basic information. He was under
the impression DT is not a full section and OPA told him it has been a full section for a number of years. OPA
also said the FBI has about 850 DT investigations out of an overall number of approximately 5,000 open
terrorism investigations. The writer also was provided with recent data on the number of domestic and
international terrorism arrests.
• NTOC Uptick: OPA - OPA continued to receive media interest in the uptick in tips to NTOC in the first week of
August. OPA continued to provide the following statement: "In the first week in August, the FBI saw an
increase in tips submitted to the National Threat Operations Center. Such increases are often observed after
major incidents. As always, the FBI encourages the public to remain vigilant and report any and all
suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately. Tips pertaining to violations of federal law or threats to
national security can be submitted to the FBI by calling local Field Offices or 1-800-Call-FBI, or online at
www.tips.fbi.gca."
• Rapid DNA: OPA - NBC News requested an interview on Rapid DNA for a still developing storyline. In lieu of
an interview, OPA provided a robust statement about Rapid DNA that addressed the staff writer's questions.

• Online Sexual Predators: OPA - The Daily Caller asked for comment about the FBI's use of social media
platforms Ilke Facebook to catch sex traffickers and what Facebook can do to prevent traffickers from

targeting minors who use the website. OPA, in coordination with CID, provided a general statement without
addressing specific platforms.
• QuadrigaCX: OPA - The Globe and Mail inquired about the FBI's investigation into the QuadrigaCX
cryptocurrency exchange, specifically the nature of the investigation. OPA declined comment and advised the
FBI had no additional information to provide outside that which was on the webpage.
Local Stories
• Boston - SSRA
participated in a roundtable discussion with area religious and community leaders as
well as U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire on protecting religious institutions from terrorist attacks.
New Hampshire media outlets covered the event.
• Boston - The local NPR station asked about the Division's involvement in the upcoming "Straight Pride
Parade" after seeing counter-protest related social media posts. In coordination with Boston Police
Department and OPA, PAO provided the following statement: "The FBI is working with the Boston Police
Department and a number of other local and state law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of all
during Saturday's event. The FBI—like our partners—is committed to addressing any threat so that those
who choose to gather peacefully can speak freely and without fear. Our focus is never on a person's
membership in particular groups but on criminal activity. The FBI cannot initiate an investigation based solely
on an individual's race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, or the exercise of rights to assemble or speak."
• Boston - Rhode Island media outlets sought clarification on whether or not Gilbert Delestre, an inmate at the
Wyatt Detention Facility who died this week at a Rhode Island hospital, is the same individual who was
convicted of murder in 2008. In coordination with USAO-District of Rhode Island, PAO advised that it was not
the same individual and that the man who died had been arrested by the FBI's "Safe Streets Gang Task
Force" on July 2 on drug related offenses.
• Boston - Significant media coverage of actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband Massimo
Gianulli's appearances at a hearing in U.S. District Court about their choice of attorney in the college
admission bribery case "Varsity Blues."
• Cleveland - SAC
provided a quote for a joint press release that announced the indictment of 15 people
for their roles in a conspiracy to bring large amounts of cocaine and heroin from Mexico and California to the
local area: "These 15 Indicted individuals may live in our area hometowns of Canton, Massillon, Orrvilie and
Wooster, but they had far reaching contacts that allowed them to bring dangerous illegal drugs into and
across our country. The FBI and our law enforcement partners will continue to identify and disrupt drug
trafficking networks distributing perilous substances in our neighborhoods." Louis Dunson III remains at large
as 14 individuals were taken into federal custody today.
• Dallas - Local Telemundo affiliate inquired about the arrest of Jose Anibal Linares. Linares is suspected of
defrauding numerous victims in the local area through a Ponzi scheme. Telemundo previously aired a story
two years ago regarding the scheme. PAS
provided the following comment, "Jose Anibal Linares was
arrested by the FBI on Sunday, August 25 at the Fort Lauderdale Airport. Mr. Linares is suspected of
committing mall and wire fraud to knowingly defraud individuals who invested with his company, Inversiones
JC Dallas. We ask anyone who believes they are the victim of a fraud scheme to contact the FBI or their local
police department to file a report."
• Las Vegas - ASAS
participated in a news conference with the USAO-District of Nevada and
announced the arrest of Colon Jackson, an enrolled member of the Ely Shoshone Tribe in northern Nevada.
Jackson was indicted on iA l,
22 and charged with first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's three-
year old daughter. ASAC
highlighted the Division's increase in resources in northern Nevada and the
importance of partnership with local and tribal partners. This investigation demonstrates the value of the
Northern Nevada Indian Country Violence Reduction initiative.
• Las Vegas - SAC
provided a quote for a USAO-District of Nevada press release about the sentencing of
Dr. Shouping U, 57, the former Vice Chief of Staff of Humboldt County General Hospital in Winnemucca,
Nev., for overprescribing oxycodone and hydrocodone: "The accessibility of deadly drugs are a threat to our
communities. Each and every day, the FBI and our partners in Nevada are working hard targeting
distributors, who illegally contribute to the oploid crisis that continues to devastate communities all over the
state of Nevada."

• Pittsburgh - SAC
discussed hoax threats on a local radio station show. SAC
explained how the
FBI addresses each of these threats when they come In, whether It's at the federal or state level. He also
highlighted the importance of "See Something, Say Something" and then stressed the repercussions for
making hoax threats.
• Pittsburgh - Division received an inquiry about whether the FBI was investigating deaths at the VA Medical
Center in Clarksburg, W.Va., after a news report said a patient was the victim of homicide while in the care of
the hospital. PAS referred the reporter to the USAO-District of Northern West Virginia.
• San Francisco - SAC
held a joint news conference with the USA0-Northern District of California and
announced the indictment of former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski on 33 charges of theft of trade
secrets. Levandowski allegedly stole self-driving car technology from Google and took it to Uber.
