A brief account of the BOP staff interviews for 8/12 are as follows:
- 4 staff members were interviewed. The Warden, the Capt, one Lt. and one guard.
- The 3 executive staff members (Warden, Capt, and Lt) provided similar information regarding procedures
and how they each followed those procedures. This generally entailed the notification process following the
discovery of Epstein and the timeline of those notifications. This information was consistent with information
previously obtained.
- The one guard interviewed,
was the guard that facilitated the unrecorded phone call with
advised that his shift ended at 7pm on 8/9, and that when Epstein returned to his cell
following his attorney meeting, he requested the phone call. This was close to the time
to
due
scheduled
to be at the end of his shift and he rushed the facilitation of the phone call. According to
due to the
lack of use of the MCC's phone system by Epstein, his voice recognition PIN was not yet set up. Therefore
facilitated the call without utilizing the PIN and the recording system. As the call was placed at the
end of i
shift, he did not remain with Epstein for the duration of the call. Instead, he requested that the
incoming shift guards remain with Epstein until the call was finished. Therefore, he was unable to provide
details on the conversation or Epstein's demeanor during or following the call.
- Attempts were made to interview both guards that worked the overnight shift. These 2 guards, Novel Tovas
and Michael Thomas, are the guards that discoverd Epstein, and when contacted, both advised the FBUOIG to
contact their attorneys. No interview has been scheduled at this time.
- An additional Lt on duty the night of 8/9 has expressed a willingness to be interviewed. Efforts will be
made to facilitate that interview tomorrow.
- The remaining staff members we have an interest in interviewing have advised they are waiting for their
BOP Union representatives/attorneys go ahead before allowing for the scheduling of an interview.
