IL Wind Ai l Parsons The New School for Design School of Constructed Environments Interior Design (AAS) Environmental Design PAID 1028-X1 SP-17 Hikida EFTA00281382 The Wind I listen to the wind To the wind of my soul Where I'll end up well I think, Only God really knows - Cat Stevens EFTA00281383 Learning Objectives • At the end of this presentation you should know: • Minimum and increased ventilation requirements; • How to specify low-emitting adhesives and sealants, paint and coatings, flooring systems, composite wood and agri-fiber, and systems furniture and seating; • How to document LEED-CI 2009 compliance for low-emitting adhesives and sealants, paint and coatings, flooring systems, composite wood and agri-fiber, and systems furniture and seating; EFTA00281384 The Air That I Breathe "Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe..." - The Hollies EFTA00281385 • How much oxygen does a person consume in a day? • The average adult at rest inhales and exhales something like 7 or 8 liters (about one-fourth of a cubic foot) of air per minute. That totals something like 11,000 liters of air (388 cubic feet) in a day. Imagine a 7'-0" x 7'-0' x 7'-0" cube = 343 cu ft. • The air that is inhaled is about 20-percent oxygen, and the air that is exhaled is about 15-percent oxygen, so about 5-percent of the volume of air is consumed in each breath and converted to carbon dioxide. Therefore, a human being uses about 550 liters of pure oxygen (19 cubic feet) per day. • A person who is exercising obviously uses a lot more oxygen than that. You could determine how much air is moving through your lungs by exhaling into a plastic bag of known volume at each breath and seeing how long it takes to fill the bag. EFTA00281386 Oxygen to Carbon Dioxide Cycle Oxygen makes up 20% o fthe earth's atmosphere. Animals exhale carbon dioxide Burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide Photosynthesis, is the process by which green plants and certain other otganisms use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide and water into the simple sugar glucose. In so doing, photosynthesis provides the basic energy source for virtually all organisms. An extremely important byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen, on which most organisms depend. erne pees Ferns —S coil 1,040 'wry volutes • a (NEWS ow° Oxygen-Carbon Dorado, Cycles v.1.0 ES World Troia 02012 nre 0094. 004.rood Own, 44.040..dunis e wee In celedow re4preun 0.4 ca.44444.44 44.4444 0004 reepeKen I weCrIWOberarnen Tels s Pe Wy44nWerbOn 00.410 CyClo Abeaphif• ft — 'Mar lelneed Radliekm ColfOn MOSS pa wlwne • I. • • 4 6 •er/ adi * lla, • 'm • roma sk Cele fee toe s of Mews, all lv ev, te.44 40,444 DWI& 40 enr(te Moe reepia40.. 00;ess !Hewn oo err re ups 44140.04 e food ern le ea tee In Owners IP•es th• easel thy Weer H EFTA00281387 E ASHRAE Standard 62.1- 1997, Table 6.1 Minimum Ventilation Rates TABLE 6-1 MINIMUM VENTILATION RATES IN BREATHING ZONE trowinued) (This table is not valid in isolation: it must be used in conjunction with the accompanying notes.) Materials considered fixtures, furniture, and equipment (FF&E) arc not considered base building elements and arc not included. Formaldehyde is a naturally occurring VOC found in small amounts in animals and plants but carcinogenic and irritating to most people when present in high concentrations, causing headaches, dizziness, mental impairment, and other symptoms. When present in the air at levels above o.1 ppm parts of air, it can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, nose and throat; nausea; coughing; chest tightness; wheezing skin rashes; and asthmatic and allergic reactions.
